01

Clean up your hard drive

Do this using a program such as CCleaner.

This freeware program is compact, contains no spyware or adware and is used to remove unused files and traces of your online activities from your computer system. This action helps Windows Vista run faster and also frees up more free space on your hard disk drive.

You can download the program from here: http://www.ccleaner.com/

02

Disable the Windows Search Service.

To do this, click on the The Windows Vista Start Orb button, then in the area right at the bottom that says Start Search, type: services.msc and press Enter.

You will then be presented with the Services window.

Scroll down to find the “Windows Search” entry.

Double click on this and when the Windows Search Properties window comes up, change the Startup type to DISABLED.

Then under Service Status, click on STOP.

That shall stop the constant Windows Search service from indexing your hard drive and in turn speed up your computer dramatically.

03

Tweak Aero.

Most recent computer systems will support Aero, however if your machine does not, then please disregard this section.

Go back to the main desktop screen and right click anywhere on the main wallpaper, and then choose Personalize.

Now in the window that comes up, select the first option, which should be: Window Color and Appearance.

If your computer supports Aero, you should see the following:

The Windows Vista Window Color and Appearance Panel Lets you customize How Windows Appear on your Desktop.

Un-tick the Enable transparency option as it appears above.

This will now help speed up your video display by disabling this feature, which is not required by most users.

04

Remove unnecessary items from Startup.

To do this, click on the windows start button button, then in the area right at the bottom that says
Start Search,

type: msconfig and press Enter.

This will launch the System Configuration window. Now click on the Startup tab.

In here will be listed all items that launch when your computer system starts up from a boot.

Un-tick any items you are sure are not required. Keep items like your anti-virus software and anything you may “think” you need. If you’re not sure on what to un-tick, the best advice would be to leave it alone OR perform one un-tick at a time and reboot after each change to see what the consequence is.

05

Disable User Account Control (UAC).

To do this, click on the windows start button button, then in the area right at the bottom that says Start Search,

type: msconfig and press Enter.

This will launch the System Configuration window once again. Now click on the Tools tab.

Scroll down to select the Disable UAC line. Once highlighted, now click on the Launch button below.

The Windows Vista System Configuration Window lets you choose which services

Reboot your computer and that annoying question asking to allow constant Vista changes to be accepted or denied will be removed.
